Paphiopedilums are Southeast Asian orchids native to moist forests. They are unique for several reasons: they are mainly terrestrial (growing underground) while most orchids are epiphytic (growing on trees); they have unusual flowers with a single petal shaped like a bag; and they are very difficult to clone, meaning that most are grown from seed into unique plants. Orchid is one of the widely planted and hybrid orchids, easy to care for.

How to plant and care
Paphiopedilums are low light orchids, making them an easy orchid to grow at home. Hybrids sold in stores grow well under typical home conditions, and many gardeners grow all of their Paphiopedilums in the same temperature range of about 60-80°F with good results. Place one near a lightly shaded east, south, or west window, or on an interior table or coffee counter. Paphiopedilums can even grow well under artificial light.
The leaves of this plant will tell you if it is getting enough light. If the leaves are slightly red, the plant is getting too much light. If its leaves are lush, dark green and the plant isn’t blooming, it’s not getting enough light. Like Goldilocks, a moderate green is just right.
Humidity
Paphiopedilums prefer moderately humid environments, anywhere between 40-70% humidity. The humidity around the orchid can be increased with a small humidifier or by placing the plant on top of a tray filled with gravel and water.
water
Paphiopedilums is special compared to other orchids in that there is no pseudobulb, the body contains water. Psuedobulbs for orchids as well as humps for camels. Because Hairy orchids don’t have a good way of storing water and don’t like to dry out completely, they need to be watered a little more often than other orchids. Watering should be done every 5 days or so, depending on where they are located and the type of growing medium. If they are planted in moss, water when the top is dry. Do not use softened water as salt can damage the plant. Although these orchids like moisture, they should not be left in water as this will rot the roots.
