Instructions for planting trees
Lilium (Lily) – a giant genus of tuberous plants native mainly to the colder regions of the Northern Hemisphere. Although there are some subtropical species. The three largest groups commonly grown include Asian, Oriental, and North American native species. The care of all three is similar.
Preferred growing conditions
Plant in a fast-draining, compost-enriched loam in the garden with full sun or half a day of partial sun. Lilies prefer slightly acidic soil and are not a good choice for highly alkaline western soils unless you want to regularly acidify the soil with sulfur in the soil. Avoid clay unless supplemented with plenty of compost to improve drainage.
Mulch with commonly available mulch materials to a depth of 2 to 3 inches. Cool, moist soil is essential for the optimal growth and flowering of lilies.
Lilies prefer suitable moist soil and need frequent watering when conditions are dry. They don’t like to dry out, but are prone to rotting if their planting site is in a low-lying area and accumulate water after a good rain.
Pruning helps plants look neater and helps them save energy for bulb growth and not seed production. But it won’t bring them back to full bloom.
Fertilize heavily in the fall with a half-mix of Yum Yum Mix and good quality compost. This can be repeated in late spring to help build humus levels in their soil.
